“Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall.”
– F. Scott Fitzgerald

24.09.22

Hello Dear Readers,

The Autumnal Equinox occurred in the Northern Hemisphere earlier this morning and so here I am trying to keep the pace and share with you the news going on around here…

As you might imagine Fall always brings the students back to the area. We love this but it certainly does change the vibe in the city. September also brings the residents back from their August vacations. I was very lucky to spend some of my summer connecting with my mothers extended family. We are all still grieving and randomly find ourselves caught off guard by her sudden passing.

Good news though, Irving House has been busy! Staffing has really come together and our new reservation program has been a wonderful jump to the present. As some of you may know Irving House had been around since before the internet & screens ruled the world! When my mother started in 1990 we used a laminated chart with tape to keep track of reservations and which room they will be assigned. Back then the “tape chart” ruled our shifts at the desk (there could only be one which made multiple users difficult) and we relied on word of mouth and people finding us in the phone book! I’m not even sure my kids have seen or would know what to do with a phone book! Our new property management system has taught us some new marketing strategies to stand out but most importantly the best ways to connect with the folks who are savvy enough to make their reservations directly with us.

Cheers to our repeat guests and those who contact us directly!

Not only do we get some relief with cooler weather but Autumn is also a great time to
take a stroll through a food festival, support a local vendor at an open market
or maybe some leaf peeping in western MA if time allows!
September brought the annual “What the Fluff” festival to Union Sq Somerville (don’t miss it next year, you can walk from Irving House!). This festival is so local you literally may not have even heard of Fluff depending on your location.

The Black Owned Pop-up Market  will still be happening every Sunday until October 27th (except for October 6th when the 45th Oktoberfest celebration will take over Harvard Sq.) Worth a stroll if you are in Harvard Sq over the weekend.

Lastly if the New England foliage is what you are after I would like to recommend adding a night to your visit and driving out to Florida…Massachusetts that is…

BLUE VISTA MOTOR LODGE
If you really want to see the changing leaves, check out MassMOCA, hike part of the Appalachian trail or just relax by a fire pit with friends may I suggest a road trip to Florida, MA! Whitcomb summit has a stunning sunrise and the Blue Vista Motor Lodge has just been renovated for your next relaxing getaway…
